Karen Harrison, author of The Herbal Alchemist's Handbook

My, Doesn’t Time….

Fly?!?  Or contract – it never expands, darn it!  The month of June is a fantastic blur of booksignings, interviews and the coming of summer.   In addtion to all that fun stuff, I had the privilege,  along with some of the other Psychics from Isis – Karen Fox, Sean Michael Morris and Gina Nigro – to donate my services at the Summer Solstice fundraiser for our local Interfaith Ministries food bank.  Met some amazing people and had a blast.

Starting to book my travel/workshop tour to see cities I’ve always wanted to see or want to visit again  So, if you would like to see me in your area, shoot me an email or a post to let me know.  This Saturday, 7/2 I’ll be doing a live, call-in show about the magick of herbs with radio host Royce Holleman onParanormal Palace Radio: http://www.paranormalpalaceradio.cz.cc   It’ll be from noon to 2 Mountain Time, 2-4pm Eastern time. Give them a call at 832 632 7904 and I will be happy to answer any herbal questions you may have.

Happy Cancer New Moon to you – tomorrow 7/1/2011!

I love playing with and using the energies of the moon tides – they give structure and ideas for engaging one’s thoughts and focus for all the projects we all want to work on.  Coming up we have our next New Moon on Wednesday, 6/1 in Gemini at 3:30pm MDT and it’s a a Solar Eclipse, too!   Rituals for clear communication, writing, change and new ideas are  perfect for this upcoming lunar event.

Since I’m working hard on letting people know about The Herbal Alchemist’s Handbook, (and doing some rought drafts for up-coming potential books), I plan to harness the energy for just that – communication!   So, here’s the first communication – my booksigning at Isis is SUNDAY, JUNE 5th (not the 4th – maybe I need a remedial calendar reading class……)   In addition to talking about herbs and magick at the booksigning, I’m also going to set out a container that I hope everybody who attends will put their name and birth information in.  I plan to pull a name at the end of the event and create a custom oil just for them!  It’s one of my favorite things to do and just sounds like fun!

For the Gemini New Moon, I’m working on a formula that will help me focus, bring through some new ideas and travel plans and help me get some of the words out of my head and onto paper.  I’ll be making a crystal-charged oil to wear (and use in my aromaburner) when I am writing and plotting.  Some of the stones for Gemini energies are clear quartz and danburite, so I’ll be adding each of those to my oil blend to give it that added magick.  Some of the herbs associated with Gemini are lavender, white sandalwood and nutmeg, so I’ll blend 10 drops Lavender, 40 drops Sandalwood, with just one drop of Nutmeg - sounds like a refreshing synergistic blend just perfect for igniting my brain!

The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of opportunities, interviews and new plots!  Last week we received the actual, real, physical book – The Herbal Alchemist’s Handbook!  Sure, I’d been working for the last 2 years on writing, revising, creating artwork and then re-writing, re-revising and creating more artwork for the book that outlines my complete obsession with herbs and their magickal uses…..but to actually hold a copy in my hands and be able to flip through the pages – that’s when it became real

I’ve been so fortunate to have many fabulous reviews done and the praise makes me feel really humble – thank you all!

This past Monday, 5/9, I was interviewed by a Canadian radio show – The X Zone.  It was a really fun interview and the host, Rob McConnell was charming.   I’d like to post a direct link to the interview, but honestly, I’m not very computer savvy.  I can manage to give you a link here to the site:  http://www.xzonetv.com/ but if you want to listen to the interview, you’ll need to click on ‘X Zone Archives’ to the left of the page and scroll down to May 9 to find me.  If I ever  figure out how to do it directly,  I’ll get that on here…..

I’ve also been plotting with Dana Cain, the organizer of the Denver County Fair (along with the amazing Tracy Weil) to have my store, Isis Books, sponsor the Holistic Pavilion at the first inaugural (is that redundant…?) of the Fair.  It’s going to be amazing – a huge pavilion full of healers, intuitives, free lectures and demonstrations all focused on alternative pathways.  You should check out the Fair website – it’s gorgeous and a hoot to read.  Here’s a link:  denvercountyfair.org

On Sunday, June 4, I’ll be greeting family, friends and fans at my very first booksigning!  If you’re in the Denver area and want to come help me celebrate, please do!  The event will start at 4pm and I promise a good time!  It’s at Isis Books, of course – 2775 S Broadway, just a half block south of Yale on the west side of Broadway.  Isis is the Egyptian Temple looking building – very cool.

There is much more coming up in the near future, and I’ll keep everybody in the loop.

The Season of Beltane

Beltane MaypoleThe luscious opening of flowers, their bright colors and scent beckoning the butterflies and bees…revealing their delicate inner parts…inviting the dance of fertility to commence.  I love it!  Beltane is one of the ‘cross-quarter’ festivals in the ancient Celtic calendar.  You are familiar, of course, with the solstices (summer and winter) and the equinoxes (spring and fall) – the astronomical times that mark the sun’s yearly processions.  The cross-quarter festivals are those times that fall in-between these solar events – approximately six weeks later that continue the turn of the Wheel of the Year.  We typically mark the cross-quarters at the very beginning or end of a month – for Beltane, May 1; for Lughnassadh, August 1, for Samhain, October 31 and for Imbolc, February 1.

Our ancestors did it a bit differently, placing the cross-quarter holidays at the time that the sun was 15 degrees into that month’s astrological sign.  As farmers, herdsmen and planters, they needed to be very aware of the turning of the seasons to ensure the success and viability of their crops and animal herds.  That means that in this year of 2011, astronomically Beltane will fall on May 5 at 2:20pm MDT (you’ll have to do the math for your area – add 2 hours for ET, subtract 1 hour for PT for instance).  So Beltane falls smack-dab at the height of the energy of the sign, Taurus, associated with sensuality, earthly pleasures, beauty, groundedness and fertility.  Sound like descriptions of the energy of Beltane, too?  You bet!  If you’d like to read about some of the folk customs associated with Beltane, you can go to a short article I’ve written:  Beltane Folklore

And in honor of the sensual nature of Beltane, I offer a simple recipe to make an aphrodisiac May Wine:

You’ll need one bottle of a light white wine  (a bottle of Gewurztraminer or a Spatlese would be perfect) and 2 ounces of dried Damiana or 4 ounces of fresh Damiana. Pour into a wide-mouthed decanter, (you’ll want to use one with a stopper so you can shake the decanter regularly without soaking yourself) leaving about 4 inches of space at the top to add your Damiana herb.  Spoon fresh-cut or dried Damiana into the decanter and press the herb down to the bottom with a wooden spoon.  Keep adding the Damiana and pressing it down until you can’t add any more but still have a little space so that you can really shake and agitate the herb in the wine.  Store your decanter where it will have a slight heat source (by the kitchen stove; in the window) and each day for a week, press the herb back down into the bottom of the bottle then shake it for 5 minutes.  You are dispersing the medicinal qualities, minerals and essential oils of your herb into the wine.  After a week, pour the wine into another container through a sieve, removing the herb particles.  You may need to do this a couple of times to remove all of the herbal debris.

Now you’re ready to share this delicious and intoxicating wine with your special lover.  Enjoy!

Indeed, some of my favorite subjects!  I’m a life-long student of herbs both magickal and medicinal as well as magick, alchemy, Qabalah and more.  I was fortunate to have been born into a family who not only supported my interests, but led me to many of my favorite practices and philosophies.  All of this is reflected in my book, The Herbal Alchemist’s Handbook.  I designed it to be a work that would be an excellent entry for the beginner, but also would add to the knowledge of the experienced herbalist as well.  Full of lore, rituals, tables and very practical how-to, I hope you will like it and find it as useful as I intended.

It’s that time of year when we’re all outside having fun – but occasionally with that great time we’re having also come bug bites, sunburns and the minor injuries of our outdoor enthusiasms.  Here are some helpful, natural remedies for the summertime blues:

For POISON OAK blend one ounce each of dried witchhazel leaves, white oak bark, mugwort, burdock root, yellowdock and dandelion leaves together.  Simmer on very low for ten minutes in two quarts of water.  Turn your mixture off and let it sit overnight.  Strain and bottle. Washaffected area several times a day to relieve itch and heal infection.

For POISON IVY you can use equal parts buttermilk and apple cider vinegar as a thin poultice on the skin or place the inside of a banana skin on affected area.  Fresh orange impatiens works well to dry up poison ivy blisters.  Break the stems then squeeze the juice onto the area and let dry.

INSECT BITES can certainly be irritating as well.  For BEE STINGS, pluck the stinger out, being careful not to squeeze the stinger as it will release more poison into your skin.  Make a thick paste of baking soda and water and apply to the sting site and let it dry on the skin.  If you have fresh chrysanthemum flowers, pluck the petals and apply them to the area.

For WASP STINGS, wash the site then apply cajeput oil.  For SPIDER BITES, steep ½ ounce each wormwood, clary sage and rue in ½ cup of olive oil in a wide mouth jar.  Let mixture sit ten days in the sun, shaking daily.  Strain and store for application to bite area.

For MOSQUITO BITES, make a paste of ¼ cup cornstarch, juice of one lemon and one teaspoon witchhazel astringent.  Apply to the bite to relieve itching and swelling.

To repel FLIES, use straight onion juice or make a mixture of one dram sassafras oil and one dram eucalyptus oil added to four ounces of rubbing alcohol and five ounces of water.  Mix and apply to the skin of both humans and animals.

To repel MOSQUITOS you can apply citronella oil directly to the skin.  Pennyroyal oil works very well, too, but should never be used by pregnant women (and you should know it can also bring on your menses –even midcycle).

If you have an infestation of ANTS in your kitchen, sprinkle cinnamon chips under the floor cabinets and by doors.  It confuses their sense of smell and direction so they can’t go back out and tell all their ant friends where your goodies are!

These  are some of my favorite natural pest solutions…..I’d love to hear about yours!
